Colour of the Month: Sage Green

Inspiration

Soft, grounded, and endlessly calming—why sage green is the colour of the moment (and maybe the year).

There’s something about sage green that feels like a deep breath. It’s the colour of stillness, of soft light through leaves, of linen aprons and freshly brewed tea. In the world of interiors—and especially kitchens—it’s a hue that has quietly tiptoed into our lives and refused to leave. And for good reason.

Sage green is soothing without being sleepy. Earthy without being rustic. Stylish without shouting about it. It’s one of those rare shades that straddles warmth and coolness with effortless ease, and the way it shifts depending on the light makes it all the more special.

This month, I wanted to dive into why sage green is such a brilliant choice for kitchens (and beyond), how to style it, and a few thoughts on how it plays with mood, texture, and lifestyle.

A Colour That Grounds You

There’s a reason green is associated with balance. It lives between the fire of red and the coolness of blue, and sage green in particular brings a softened, powdery version of that equilibrium into the home. In a kitchen—often the busiest room in the house—it acts almost like a visual exhale.

Clients often tell me they want a kitchen that feels calm. Not sterile, not minimalist to the point of coldness—just calm. And sage green delivers that in spades. It brings with it a natural tranquillity that can make a space feel instantly more peaceful, more you.

Where It Works Best

Sage green is stunning on cabinetry—especially in kitchens where you want softness without going all-out neutral. It plays beautifully with wood, marble, brushed brass, or even matte black. Whether it’s your full kitchen or just the island or larder cupboard, it adds just enough interest without demanding attention.

But it’s also a brilliant choice for walls, tiles, or even smaller styling accents like window dressings, painted stools, or shelf displays.

Some favourite sage green combinations:

  • Sage + White: Fresh, clean, endlessly elegant. Think classic Shaker-style kitchens with crisp white walls.
  • Sage + Wood: Adds warmth and texture. A pale oak floor or walnut worktop makes the green sing.
  • Sage + Blush: A quiet but charming pairing—especially if you love a softer, romantic feel.
  • Sage + Brass: Warm metal details like taps or handles elevate the colour and make it feel grown-up and tailored.

Not Just a Trend

What I love about sage green is how timeless it feels. Yes, it’s having a bit of a moment right now, but it’s not going to age in the way some bolder trends might. It’s rooted in nature. It’s a colour you find in wild herbs, eucalyptus, olive leaves. It’s always been around—just now it’s stepping into the spotlight a little more boldly.

And the beauty of that? It works equally well in modern, traditional, or transitional spaces. You can pair sage green with sleek, flat-front cabinetry and stone worktops for a contemporary look, or go with tongue-and-groove panels and cup handles for something more classic.

The Power of Wall Colour

Cabinetry aside, one of the most underrated places for sage green is the walls. Especially in kitchens that open onto the garden, it’s the perfect bridge between the outside world and your home. I love using sage green on walls that wrap around big bifold doors or French windows—it draws the outside in and makes the transition from patio to prep space feel seamless.

It’s also a brilliant choice for homes that lean into seasonal living. In spring and summer, sage green sings alongside the blooms outside and feels like an extension of the garden. In the cooler months, it becomes the comforting background to golden candlelight, warming herbs in stews, and long cups of tea.

If you’re lucky enough to have a kitchen that overlooks a garden, or even a leafy street, painting the walls in a sage tone enhances that connection to nature and softens any hard lines in the room. It’s especially gorgeous when paired with natural stone floors, jute rugs, or rattan touches.

And for those more open-plan, multifunctional kitchen-dining-living spaces? A soft sage wall can create a cohesive flow that still feels intentional—like a visual hug wrapping its arms around the entire space.

Mood, Mind, and Kitchen Moments

One of my favourite things about colour in interiors is how it makes us feel. And sage green, for me, is the ultimate feeling colour. It can be rejuvenating or restful. Clean or cozy. Depending on how you style it, it can shift from botanical and breezy to moody and elegant.

For clients with busy households, hectic work lives, or just a lot going on (so… everyone?), sage green creates a sense of control. You walk into the kitchen and everything feels just that little bit softer.

One client once told me she wanted her kitchen to feel “like a hug that also lets me get stuff done.” We chose sage cabinetry with warm oak accents and soft cream walls—and honestly, it did feel like a hug. With storage.

Bringing it to Life: Styling Notes

If you’re drawn to sage green, chances are you love a bit of texture too. It really shines when you add layered, tactile elements—linen blinds, ceramic tiles, open shelves with earthy ceramics, leafy plants, natural wood.

Here are a few styling ideas to build around sage green:

  • Add natural greenery: Keep the theme going with potted herbs, olive trees, or cascading ivy.
  • Layer soft lighting: Think warm LED strips under cabinets, table lamps on a console, or glass pendant lights with dimmers.
  • Keep surfaces simple: Let the green be the star. Pale stone or composite worktops, matt black or bronze hardware, and minimal clutter keep it looking fresh.
  • Play with pattern: Think terrazzo tiles, herringbone splashbacks, or wallpaper in an adjoining dining nook to introduce subtle movement.

On My Travels: Sage in the City

I’ve been spotting sage green everywhere lately—especially on my walks around Norwich. It’s on shutters, on shopfronts, in the leaves tumbling down Cathedral Close walls. It’s elegant on the outside of Georgian townhouses, fresh and unexpected in cosy cafes.

There’s a softness to it that feels very Norwich, somehow. Unassuming, but full of character.

It’s always a treat to see how a colour plays out in different contexts—and a reminder that inspiration is often just a wander away.

If You’re Thinking About Sage…

If you’re in the early stages of planning a kitchen, or just daydreaming about a refresh, sage green is a brilliant place to start. It’s a colour that gives you space to breathe—and let’s be honest, we could all use more of that.

Even if you’re not ready for a full kitchen overhaul, consider adding a pop of sage with painted furniture, soft furnishings, or even accessories like serving bowls, bread bins, or ceramic lamps. It’s a gentle way to bring nature in.

A Few Favourite Sage-y Things This Month

  • Little Greene’s “Sage Green”: Rich, velvety, and beautiful on walls or cabinetry.
  • Farrow & Ball’s “Vert de Terre”: A softer, chalkier sage that shifts with the light.
  • Garden Trading’s Hanstone Stripe Edge Napkins in “Rosemary”: Just a hint of colour at the table.
  • Norwich Market: For bunches of fresh herbs and the best sage-coloured seasonal veg.

Final Thought

Sage green isn’t just a trend colour—it’s a feeling. And in the kitchen, where we cook, gather, rush, pause, and sometimes dance, it’s a colour that makes room for it all.

Whether you’re at the start of your kitchen journey or just looking to feel a bit more grounded in your space, sage green is a beautiful place to begin.
